The Grace Of The Turning Season

There is a particular moment in September when you realize the season has begun to change.

Not because the calendar tells you so.

The afternoons may still feel like summer. The trees have not yet surrendered their green. But the morning light falls a little differently. The evenings arrive a little earlier. And somewhere in the middle of an ordinary day, you notice that something has shifted.

I have always loved that about September.

It reminds me that some of the most meaningful changes in our lives happen quietly.

We tend to look for beginnings with clear markers—a new year, a new job, a new home, a celebration, an announcement. We expect change to arrive at the front door and introduce itself.

But often, it simply begins.

A habit changes. A door opens. Something we have carried for too long becomes easier to put down. We find ourselves ready for something we were not ready for before.

And sometimes we do not recognize the beginning until we are already standing in the middle of it.

Nature seems to understand this better than we do. It does not resist every turning. It does not demand to know exactly what comes after the leaves fall before allowing them to go.

There is a lesson in that.

Not every season is meant to be held onto simply because it was good. And not every unfamiliar season should be feared simply because we cannot yet see what it will become.

Perhaps grace is trusting the turning.

Trusting that there is beauty in what has been, purpose in what is changing, and something worth welcoming in what comes next.

So as September begins its quiet work around us, I am trying to notice it—not only outside my window, but in my own life.

And to remember that sometimes a new beginning does not look like a beginning at all.

Sometimes, it simply feels like the light changing.
